To different people, a positive health care experience can look like many things. It is not about being perfect, but about providing affirming care for diverse people and communities. Although the health care system is universal in Canada, there are still disparities as not everyone has equal access to the care they need and deserve. It is particularly evident for mental health and sexual health, as individuals may feel hesitant to access health care due to concerns around or previous experiences of stigma and discrimination. This handbook includes scenarios, discussion prompts, and tips for health care professionals to provide comprehensive and affirming care related to mental and sexual health and all the ways they intersect.
