Female Genital Mutilation and Education

This article highlights the links between FGM and education. In the countries of sub-Saharan Africa in which FGM is practised, girls who are excluded from (basic) education suffer a number of disadvantages. They are denied the advantages and opportunities accruing from the acquisition of knowledge about health, nutrition or legal rights as well as information about the risks of harmful practices. It also mentioned that basic education can be an effective instrument for eliminating the practice of FGM citing cases in Burkina Faso and Mali, where the issue of FGM has been successfully integrated into school classrooms.
