This publication is the result of work undertaken in phase one of ‘The Johannesburg Initiative’, which was realized by comparing abortion advocacy experiences from different parts of the world. The aim of the initiative is to build capacity amongst those engaged in advocacy for improving abortion access, whether through legal change or by increasing access to and quality of services. By providing case studies of different experiences, activists can interrogate the strategies used by other activists in
different countries and learn from their successes and mistakes. The project also aimed to provide an example of southern-initiated activism that builds bridges and facilitates learning between regions and countries of the north and south.
